London’s universities and higher education colleges are a powerhouse of research, teaching and technology transfer unrivalled anywhere in the UK, Europe and beyond. Collectively, higher education institutions (HEIs) in London:

  • Generate £12 billion each year in goods and services and £1.4 billion in export earnings;
  • Educate 417,000 students from the UK and overseas, who are able to choose from over 6,400 undergraduate courses and nearly 4,600 postgraduate qualifications;
  • Employ 99,000 academic and non-academic staff;
  • Win about 25% of Research Council grants and £467 million in recurrent grant research funding from HEFCE;
  • Attract to the UK 102,000 international students from over 200 countries, who in turn contribute £2.5 billion to the UK economy; 
  • Produce over 58,000 skilled graduates every year, 90% of whom find work in London and the South East.

London's Population

London is an international city with an incredibly diverse population. The following key points relate to London's population in 2009:

  • the capital had 7.8 million people making up 15% of England’s population
  • 35% of Londoners were between 24-44 years old
  • 19% of London's workforce commute into the capital 
  • 21% of Londoners were not UK nationals but came from over 33 different countries
  • over 300 languages are spoken in London
  • between 2008 and 2028 London’s population is projected to increase by 16% and reach 8.9 million people
