LONDON HIGHER NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2006
2012 UPDATE SPECIAL:
What Next for Higher Education and the Olympic and Paralympic Games?
London Higher is pleased to announce that following the PA Consulting scoping study, London Higher together with AoC London have secured funding to establish an independent single, UK inclusive 2012 FE-HE coordination unit. Funding has just been granted by the DfES enabling a coordination unit to be in place by autumn 2006.
Among the first tasks of the unit will be to create a sustainable business plan and to ensure that the 14 thematic task groups are established and prioritised.
We appreciate your feedback on this edition of London Higher’s eZine and we would also like your opinions about future editions - are there any topics in the HE sector you would like to know more about?
On Your Marks: HE and the 2012 Games
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has made a strong start in the build up to 2012 and is encouraged by the continued enthusiasm of all its supporters. LOCOG recently outlined its schedule of milestones:
2008 Beijing Closing Ceremony handover to London 2012
2010 Volunteer Recruitment programme launched
2011 Olympic Games tickets go on sale
2010/2012 Test Events
2012 27 July London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
2012 9 August London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony
In accordance with LOCOG’s request to establish a single communications point for the HE sector in the UK, London Higher is currently leading a HE scoping study to help identify an inclusive and effective structure for the higher education contribution to the 2012 Games. Over 60% of all HE institutions in the UK have completed a survey which will help shape the report. Supported by HEFCE, AoC LR and UUK, the findings of the study will be released at an event on 30 March 2006.
