London Higher Key Facts
Welcome to the third edition of London Higher’s Key Facts series. Throughout the year we will provide you with a variety of facts about London’s Higher Education (HE) sector. In this edition, we provide you with the highlights of the latest key facts in London’s international student market for the academic year 2004/05 (Source: HESA Data 2004/5).
You can read all of these key facts and much more by downloading the International Students Factsheet 2004/05.
- Almost 83,000 HE students studying in London are from outside the UK, representing 1 in 5 of all students studying in London.
- The number of international students in London increased by 13% from 2003/4 to 2004/5 - compared to 4% for the rest of the UK.
- The number of students from China increased 22% from 2003/4 to 2004/5. However, this annual growth rate is 14% lower than the previous year. Chinese students account for almost 1 in 10 of all international students in the capital.
- London still has more international students than its two main competitor cities - New York (61,945) and Sydney (42,075).
In previous years, London’s annual growth rate has been lower than its rivals, but in 2004/5, New York and Sydney total international student populations decreased by 2% and 1% respectively compared to a 13% increase in London.
There was a 57% annual increase in students from Pakistan studying in the capital (compared to a 45% increase in the UK). London now accounts for 41% of all students from Pakistan studying in the UK.
We appreciate your feedback on this edition of London Higher’s Key Facts and we would also like your opinions about future editions - are there any topics in the HE sector you would like to know more about?
NEWS AND EVENTS
London Calling: Next stop China
As part of an ongoing promotional initiative in key international markets, the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, will be visiting Beijing and Shanghai in early April 2006 to promote London's educational, tourist and business opportunities. London Higher has been working with the organisers, London Unlimited, to arrange educational themed events.
China’s importance as an educational market, for both undergraduate study and postgraduate research, is set to increase as more Chinese students consider overseas locations. The visit will promote the breadth and depth of London’s educational institutions as well as the unique cluster of museums, galleries and libraries which together make London the world's knowledge capital.
