Blast Off: Mayor Launches New Study London Campaign
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone aunched the new Study London campaign, an international promotion showcasing London as the best place to be a student.
The Study London campaign - a collaboration between the Mayor of London, Visit London, London Higher and the London Development Agency - includes a specially designed interactive on-line game called High Fliers where players compete to fly overseas students to London, a new promotional booklet and updated website.
Mayor Ken Livingstone said: “London truly is the best city in the world to be a student. It offers globally renowned academic excellence, a rich cultural heritage, and access to vibrant and diverse social and leisure pursuits. It provides unparalleled opportunities to see global business, politics, law and the arts in action. And with over 300 languages spoken, anyone from anywhere can feel at home here. We are proud that over 73,000 international students study here each year - more than in any other world city - and this campaign aims to encourage even more by explaining what London has to offer.”
As well as highlighting the range of education opportunities in the capital, the Study London campaign promotes the capital's diversity and vibrancy, its social and leisure attractions. Over 250,000 copies of the booklet will be distributed overseas through British Council and Visit Britain offices, and through London's universities and higher education colleges. At the same time, the interactive game will be emailed throughout the world.
A Year of Achievement: London Higher Plenary and Summer Reception 2005
London Higher held its annual Summer Reception on 9 June 2005 at Senate House to celebrate London HE's partnerships and achievements over the past year and to thank all those who have helped and supported the organisation. Over 150 people from key London Higher stakeholder organisations attended the reception and enjoyed networking over drinks. Joining the heads of London's HE institutions were many of the Principals of London's 54 Further Education Colleges and key representatives from industry and policy making institutions.
Speakers at the reception included Mike Stone (Head of Education, Barclays Plc), Dame Janet Ritterman (Director of the Royal College of Music), Minister Li Ruiyu (Charge d'Affaires, Chinese Embassy) and Bill Rammell MP (Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education).
Earlier in the day at the London Higher business meeting, the new London Higher constitution was approved together with the forthcoming Operational Plan (2005-6), the Annual Review (2004-5) and the new three year Business Strategy (2005-8). Membership of the incoming Steering Committee for 2005-06 was also confirmed. We send our thanks and best wishes to two retiring heads of member institutions; Dame Janet Ritterman (Royal College of Music) and Professor Sandy Florence CBE (School of Pharmacy, University of London).

Aimhigher - Aimsafer: Safeguarding Children and Young People in Higher Education
A new framework for safeguarding children and young people when they visit higher education institutions was launched on 10 May. Aimhigher-Aimsafer was created by London Aimhigher, NSPCC Training and Consultancy, and Roehampton University. Many of the recommendations reflect the findings of the Bichard Inquiry.
The event was chaired by Sir Roderick Floud, President of London Metropolitan University; with guest speakers Angela O'Donoghue, Principal of Brooke House Sixth Form College in Hackney; Diane Chorley, a Trustee of the NSPCC; and Sir Michael Bichard, Chair of the Bichard Inquiry. The framework was warmly welcomed as Sir Michael highlighted the need for the framework as higher education is currently behind the rest of the education sector in highlighting the importance of child safeguarding and in having appropriate polices in place.
