Vision and Excellence - Establishing London as the Knowledge Capital of the World
London MPs, Peers and business leaders welcomed the launch of a strategy to promote London as the knowledge capital of the world.
Hosted at the House of Lords in partnership with London First, the successful launch event attracted over 230 people and was sponsored by the Barclays Education Team. The strategy, Vision and Excellence: Establishing London as the Knowledge Capital of the World, sets out ten key objectives under four overarching themes:
A major promotional campaign aimed at raising awareness of the unique cluster of higher education institutions, professional organisations and businesses that exists in London and the benefits they bring to the capital (and the UK).
The development of state-of-the-art facilities, such as academic villages and science parks to attract the world’s best students and researchers to the city.
Powerful policies aimed at improving recruitment and retention of top quality staff.
Innovative projects to develop the extensive role Higher Education already plays to widen participation and enhance social inclusion across some of the most deprived areas of the UK, and to work with business to enable people across the capital to acquire, and maintain, appropriate skills.
Professor Adrian Smith, Principal of Queen Mary, University of London, and Chair of London Higher, said:
"There is simply no other city in the world quite like London. The city dominates the global market in higher education. But we can't afford to stand still. By setting out this vision London's universities and higher education colleges are building on the excellence that already exists and preparing ourselves for the opportunities of the future."

The Creative Capital - Exploring London's Creative Education Sector
London's creative juices were flowing at The Design Council on 16 February when London Higher, in partnership with Creative London, hosted an event to celebrate The Creative Capital.
The event demonstrated the importance of London's Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to the creative sector in London and the UK. In her presentation to the audience, the Rt. Hon. Estelle Morris MP spoke of a 'creative revolution' and of the many opportunities, as well as challenges, for all those with an interest or an involvement in the creative and cultural industries.
The launch publication, The Creative Capital, demonstrates that London is without doubt a global leader in the arts with its cultural life the envy of the world. In theatre, music, broadcast media, fashion, design, advertising, architecture and the fine arts, London provides the full range - from the traditional mainstream to the avant-garde.
Central to this enterprise are many of London's HEIs - specialist institutions and multi-faculty universities - which develop much of the talent, expertise and underpinning research that help to sustain and enhance London's creative and cultural industries.
Hosted by Professor Roderick Floud, President of London Metropolitan University and a former Chair of London Higher, the event sparked a lively debate with the Rt Hon Estelle Morris MP being joined on the platform by Professor Geoffrey Crossick, Chief Executive Officer of the Arts and Humanities Research Board and Manny Lewis, Chief Executive of the London Development Agency.
NEWS AND EVENTS
Back the Bid - Its up to you!
The IOC inspection of London’s bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was deemed a great success by all involved. But there is still a great deal more that can be done in the countdown to the big decision on 6 July in Singapore. Continuing its successful collaboration with London 2012, London Higher is helping to support and inform the shape of two important components of London’s bid: the proposed Olympic Institute and the four year Olympic cultural programme.
Lord Coe recently praised the support of London's 42 HEIs, particularly applauding the importance of HEIs to help generate excitement about the bid within their institution and local communities. Please use the online resources at the London 2012 Press Room to help you promote the bid within your organisation and your local community.
New landmark building for Goldsmiths College, University of London
This January Goldsmiths College, University of London, welcomed students into its spectacular new building designed by renowned architects, Alsop & Partners.
The Ben Pimlott Building - named in honour of the last Goldsmiths Warden who died unexpectedly in 2004 - houses arts and digital studios, and a new research unit; the Centre for Cognition, Culture and Computation. Three sides of the seven-storey structure are clad in metal whilst the entire north face is glazed, flooding the studios with daylight. With its giant rooftop scribble sculpture, the building not only provides a new landmark for Goldsmiths, but the whole of South East London.
