SHELL Conference on 9 March 2010

An audience of approaching 120 drawn in broadly equal numbers from London’s secondary schools, its universities and higher education colleges and others such as local authorities formed mixed groups in the QEII Conference Centre in March to hear two ministers and a number of experts in partnership-making.

The event was co-chaired and managed from the platform by Professor David Woods CBE, Chief Adviser for London Schools, and Professor Malcolm Gillies, Vice-Chancellor of London Metropolitan University, both of whom also co-chair the SHELL Delivery Board. They both proved adroit at handling the views sent from the delegates’ tables and the voting pads.

Alongside delegates from the two sectors, the organizers were particularly pleased that the Rt Hon. David Lammy MP, higher education minister, and Diana Johnson MP, minister for London schools, were both able to address the conference. Each of them is able to speak from personal and constituency experience about the importance of working across sectors.

Other speakers were Professor Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of Exeter University and President of Universities UK, Sue John, headteacher of Lampton School, Hounslow, and Professor Geoff Whitty, Director of the Institute of Education, University of London.

The event offered a mix of encouragement (from the ministers), national policy evolution and challenges (from Steve Smith), inspirational ‘how we do it’ illustrations (from Sue John) and relevant research evidence (Geoff Whitty).
