Sharing Knowledge

Universities and higher education colleges are playing a vital role during the current economic recession by supplying highly skilled graduates, exploiting innovative research and providing expert advice to commercial organisations, public bodies, community projects and the third sector.

During 2009 examples of best practice from higher education institutions (HEIs) were collected in a series of HERA Barometer reports by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Working Capital gives an overview of how HEIs are supporting and driving economic recovery in London.

The HERA Barometer

Magnifying glass

During 2009, HEFCE requested regular reports on economic recovery programmes from all nine English HERAs (Higher Education Regional Associations; London Higher is London Region’s HERA).

Each HERA worked with its member universities and higher education colleges in collating data and case studies.

Aims of the HERA Barometer were to provide Government and other national stakeholders with timely information on:

  • how the HE sector is responding to the economic downturn
  • changes in demand for HE provision and services
  • examples of good practice as well as barriers to an effective response

Four HERA Barometer reports were issued and can be viewed by clicking here or visiting the HEFCE website.

London Higher Activities

In May 2009, London Higher submitted a proposal for funding from HEFCE to collect information for the Barometer reports, run workshops and share best practises among our 40+ member universities and higher education colleges.

A workshop on completing Barometer returns was run in September 2009 with HE contacts. An example of a Barometer template for HE institutions to complete can be viewed by clicking on this link.
