Research Council Funding

Factsheets have been updated on Research Council success rates and amounts awarded during 2010/11.
For six of the seven Research Councils, research organisations in London competitively won over £260 million in funding, with 32% coming from the Medical Research Council (MRC). Research organisations, primarily universities, also obtained £14.1 million from the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in 2009/10.

London Workforce Development - London Courses Directory

Coming soon.....in the New Year, London Workforce Development will be launching LondonCourses – an online guide to short courses offered by universities in and around London.
Whether you are an employer searching for short courses for training and development of your staff, or an employee seeking courses related to your job, LondonCourses will provide you with easy access to a range of short courses.
These courses span a range of subject areas addressing the needs of different job sectors, are appropriate for people working at different levels within different types of organisations, and are offered at a location convenient for you.
AccessHE - Social Mobility through HE in London

AccessHE is a new Division of London Higher and aims to support the progression to HE of learners from groups in London presently under-represented in HE.

The Prospectus contains information on various activities on offer at 20 of the AccessHE Partner HEIs and activities led by AccessHE itself. A full, up-to-date list can be found by following this link.
Copies of the Prospectus have been sent to over 500 London schools and colleges, inviting them to join AccessHE and identify a member of staff as an AccessHE Advocate. To date we have 150 registered Advocates.
AccessHE Launch Reception
The event was held in November 2011 at the House of Commons and was extremely well attended, with over 70 guests from across the education sectors.
Speakers included Rt Hon Simon Hughes MP (the Advocate for Access to Education) and students from Haringey Sixth Form Centre and Paddington Academy.
The AccessHE/Centre for London report entitled ‘London’s Calling: Young Londoners, Social Mobility and Access to Higher Education’ was launched at the event. This report gives the most recent and comprehensive overview of participation in HE amongst lower socio-economic groups in the capital, with detailed analysis of the different reasons why students choose particular institutions or locations. AccessHE’s Programme of Events
These are now well underway with AccessHE Action Forums having been held on Looked After Children; Evidence & Evaluation: Proving Impact for OFFA; Transition and Retention; Arts Specialists.
A very successful Student Finance Day Expo was held in November at which over 70 students (from Years 12-13) and staff from 10 London schools attended and six AccessHE Partner HEIs delivered Workshops.

Podium: Forthcoming Events

23 February – Researching and Evaluating the Games Conference
The Department for Culture Media and Sport are delivering a joint event with Podium to encourage and discuss research and evaluation in relation to the London 2012 Games.
The Researching and Evaluating the Games Conference will bring together academics from institutions across the UK to discuss topics that fit within the four main areas of the London 2012 ‘legacy plan’:
- Sport: harnessing the UK's passion for sport to increase grass roots participation and competitive sport and to encourage physical activity
- Economic: exploiting the opportunities for economic growth offered by hosting the Games;
- Community Engagement: promoting engagement and achieving participation across all groups in society through the Games
- East London regeneration: ensuring that the Olympic Park can be developed after the Games as one of the principal drivers of regeneration in East London
Podium is inviting individuals and/or organisations to submit papers for oral presentations within the above themes. For full details and criteria for submitting a paper for this event please click here.
3 May – Podium Awards Evening
The Podium Awards will be a one-off celebration recognising the very best projects related to London 2012 across the Further and Higher Education sectors.
The Awards Evening will recognise colleges and universities for their work on:
- hosting Pre-Games training camps for competing nations from all over the world,
- helping to recruit a Games-time workforce of more than 170,000 people, and
- leading research on London 2012 and its legacy.
Colleges and universities are also delivering a diverse range of 2012-inspired programmes to engage people from all walks of life across the fields of art, culture, education, media and sport.
The Podium Awards Evening will take place at Forman’s Fish Island which boasts unparalleled views of the London 2012 Olympic Park.
This event takes place on 3rd May 2012, the day before the British Universities and College Sport Championships (4-6 May) inside the Olympic Park in front of 40,000 spectators.
Information on how to nominate a project or institution for an award will be available from January 2012.

Meeting on Postgraduate Provision
London Higher is organising a roundtable discussion on 'The Future for London's Postgraduate Education', with Sir Adrian Smith, Director General Science & Research, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
The meeting is restricted to Heads of institutions which are members of London Higher and will take place on Monday 9 January 2012.
