Healthcare Education Group

Healthcare projects

The Healthcare Education Group was set up in 2001 as part of a process of creating opportunities for wider contact to be made between providers of healthcare education in London and their NHS and regional stakeholders.

Terms of reference

The group has a remit:

  • to monitor the health and healthcare environment in London and identify potential opportunities and issues of shared concern for the HE group;
  • to discuss such issues and determine effective ways forward;
  • where appropriate to liaise with one another (and outside bodies when necessary) to deliver timely interventions in line with a) and b) above;
  • to promote the regional, national and international contributions made by the HE group in the field of health and healthcare.

Current Initiatives

The group is currently:

  • Surveying London healthcare education providers to determine future priorites for the group
  • Exploring the implications of the 2010 White Paper for healthcare education providers in London
  • Developing a project to investigate the changing roles of healthcare professionals as service delivery is increasing provided in the community.

2010 White Paper

   Meeting with Department of Health

A delegation of members from the Healthcare Education Group and London Medicine met with the Director of Workforce Development from the Department of Health on the 8 November 2010.

The delegation set out to better understand the Department of Health's thinking on education commissioning in the framework of the White Paper and, to raise issues and questions regarding the implications of the White Paper for health education.

As a means to raise members' views the London Higher: response to recent Government proposals affecting education provision for the health professions was prepared in advance of the meeting and left with the Department of Health.

   London Higher White Paper breakfast briefing

London Higher hosted a breakfast briefing on 15 September 2010 about the White Paper Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS and the implications of this for higher education.

Dr Anna Dixon, Director of Policy, The King's Fund was the guest speaker at the briefing which was attended by members of the Healthcare Education Group and London Medicine.

Membership

The Group is Chaired by Prof. Fiona Ross Faculty of Health & Social Care Sciences Kingston University and St George's, University of London.
