About London Medicine

London's higher education institutions provide world-class medical and dental education and a high concentration of excellent research facilities.   

  • Of the 44,400 undergraduate medical and dental students studying in the UK in 2008/09 23% were in London.¹
  • In the same period 39% of the 18,570 postgraduate medical and dental students in the UK were studying in London.²
  • £3.7 billion was received in research grants and contracts by UK HEIs in 2007/08, of this amount £766,464,000 (21%) was secured by the institutions in the London Medicine Group.³
  • London has 3 of the 5 Academic Health Science Centres in England, three Health Innovation and Education Clusters and 7 of the 12 NIHR Biomedical Research Centres.

Membership

The membership of London Medicine is comprised of the Heads of London’s schools of medicine, dentistry and associated clinical academic disciplines, as well as a second senior representative from each school.

The Group is Chaired by Professor Peter Kopelman, Principal, St. George's, University of London.

The following schools are members of London Medicine:

Medical Schools

  • Barts and the London School of Medicine, Queen Mary, University of London
  • Imperial College London School of Medicine
  • King’s College London School of Medicine 
  • St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London
  • University College London Medical School

Dentistry Schools

  • Barts and the London School of Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London
  • King’s College London Dental Institute
  • University College London Eastman Dental Institute

Clinical Academic Schools

  • London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London
  • The Institute of Cancer Research 
  • The School of Pharmacy, University of London

Terms of Reference

London Medicine was set up in 2009 with a remit to:  

  • monitor the healthcare policy environment as it applies to the membership of the Group and identify opportunities and issues of shared concern;
  • where appropriate liaise with outside bodies to deliver timely interventions in line with the point above;
  • promote the regional, national and international contributions made by London Medicine;
  • coordinate initiatives approved by the London Medicine Group;
  • hold three meetings a year to discuss current issues.
