The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is Britain's national school of public health, the largest institution of its kind in Europe, and a leading postgraduate institution worldwide for research and postgraduate education in global health.

Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of health worldwide through the pursuit of excellence in research, postgraduate teaching and advanced training in national and international public health and tropical medicine, and through informing policy and practice in these areas. LSHTM is located in Bloomsbury, Central London.

Our current relationships with London schools
Although LSHTM is a specialised postgraduate institution which does not teach undergraduate courses we are proud to be involved with several London schools and local authorities.

Work experience
For almost a decade, we have been running work experience programs at LSHTM for young people aged between 14-18 from disadvantaged schools. We have taken students from schools across Barking & Dagenham for nine years, and are still the only university to offer academic work experience placements for young people from the borough.  Since 2008 we have also been working with one new school from Westminster council and this year look forward to hosting students from Camden.

At LSHTM, we give students a chance to see how health research works in the real world by supporting them in conducting an original piece of independent research. We take groups of between 10 and 18 students in two or three sessions a year, organising these via the Borough's work experience coordinators teams.  To find out more about the work experience program and past projects visit

School workshops
This year for the first time, we held a one-day workshop for fifteen year 10 and 11 students from a school in Greenwich.

Contacting us and possibilities for your school to get involved
The LSHTM program is run entirely by volunteers. The current coordinator of the program is Anna Goodman, who can be reached at volunteering@lshtm.ac.uk. However, please note that in general we organise work experience sessions via the Borough work experience coordinator teams.  Because we only hold work experience sessions two or three times a year, whether we can take your pupils depends on how the timing of their work experience corresponds with the slots we are offering.  We may, however, be able to arrange individual one-day workshops with schools directly.

Contacting our academic departments
For all general work experience or workshop enquiries, please contact Anna Goodman:
