Part-time Study in London

In 2003/04 London higher education institutions enrolled 144,000 part-time students – 17% of all part-time Higher Education (HE) students nationally.

Part-time study

It is claimed that part-time students are frequently overlooked or misrepresented by policy makers and stakeholders in HE, individuals for whom part-time study may be particularly relevant are not fully aware of the options available and some employers do not fully appreciate the value of part-time qualifications nor the value part-time students bring to a job.  In order to examine some of these claims London Higher commissioned the following research into part-time study in London:

In order to examine some of these claims, London Higher commissioned research into part-time study in London (click here to download) including research into London employers' attitudes towards part-time study, funded with LDA support.

The main findings from this research showed that, firstly, few employers have approached HEIs and secondly, Government subsidies for part-time courses would make employers more willing to encourage part-time study amongst employees, however few employers are aware of subsidies already made available by the Government.

In order to address these findings, London Higher has produced two new publications targeted at employers:

  • Higher Returns - An at-a-glance leaflet informing employers of the funding available for staff who study for part-time higher education courses.
  • Skills and the City - Highlighting examples of the successful partnerships London HEIs have with employers in meeting their business needs.

These documents can be downloaded from the Publications page.
