The overarching aims of the group are tri-fold: to showcase London’s research offer, to demonstrate the impacts of research conducted in London and to foster research collaboration among London’s HEI.
Specifically the Group is remitted to:
a) Articulate research challenges unique to London and facilitate the coming together of London HEIs and relevant partners to build consortia/collaborations to address them;
Related to this singular aim, and in support of it, the Group is also remitted to:
b) Create a space for the promotion of London HE research in general;
c) Explore impact measures to address the REF requirements;
d) The group is additionally tasked with assisting the GLA and its related bodies in communicating with the London research base.
Since it started work the group has looked at: a database of spin-out activities achieved by London HEIs; a bibliometric study of research for London; an analysis of research funding won by London HEIs; an evaluation of the intra-regional, national and international research collaborations of which London is a part, RAE 2008 results. Reports are available to members of London Higher via our Members' Area.
London Research Challenges.
We are currently exploring the potential for London's HEIs to further contribute to meeting the Mayor of London's strategic goals.
Through so-called 'translation groups' the London Research Challenges project aims to scrutinize each of the twelve statutory Mayoral strategies to identify where London HEIs, through their research excellence, can collaborate to address some of the challanges faced by this world city.
The project aims to demonstrate how HEIs and World Cities can work together to improve the lives of milllions.

The Group is Chaired by Prof. Geoff. Rogers, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Research, Brunel University.
