Roehampton University

Roehampton University image

Roehampton University is a small, friendly, collegiate community where students can live, learn and socialise together on a beautiful and historic campus in south west London.

With a tradition of commitment to equality, Roehampton has one of the most diverse communities of students of any university in the UK, and in an era of globalisation, studying in a community that consists of over 130 different nationalities prepares our students to do business with people from around the world.

The University has a broad range of expertise across the arts and humanities, social sciences and the human and life sciences, at the same time as maintaining its historic strength in education. Additionally, we have a growing reputation for new and innovative business and management programmes. Studying these subjects at Roehampton means that students acquire the essential skills they need to develop successful careers in a complex and fast changing world.

We also have one of the strongest profiles for research among any modern university in the UK, with two of our areas, Dance and Biological Anthropology, rated best in the country in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. And because our students are taught directly by academics with national and international reputations for their research, they learn in an environment that is rich in creativity and new ideas.

Our current relationships with London schools
These relationships are principally managed by the UK Recruitment and Widening Participation unit, part of the Recruitment and International Development department.

Our School of Education, through placement of BA Primary and PGCE Primary and Secondary students, and CPD courses for teachers, has long-standing links with many London schools.

We have also formed a centrally co-ordinated Secondary Schools and University Partnership with ten London schools to develop greater opportunities for progressive engagement between the University and the schools.

The University works with the local community in a number of ways. MOVE, for example, is a sports-based social inclusion project that aims to engage and support young people living in an area of social disadvantage on the Alton Estate in Roehampton. MOVE aims to promote life skills through sport and to enhance the lives of young people. Through the project young people use University sports facilities and take part in out-of-school-hours and holiday activities, including football, basketball, netball, street dance and cheerleading. MOVE also provides opportunities for local people to gain recognised qualifications in sports coaching. For more details on MOVE click here.

The Widening Participation team
Working with school years 6-11 and with FE college students to help raise aspiration and attainment, the team arranges: masterclasses designed to enhance students’ understanding of national curriculum subjects; taster days which give students the opportunity to experience tailored lectures, question undergraduates, and tour the campus/accommodation; library/research skills activities; and ‘shadow-a-student days.

We work closely with Aimhigher and Lifelong Learning networks in south and west London.

The UK Recruitment team
Working principally with Years 12 and 13 students, we offer a range of activities for those considering progressing to HE. These can focus on academic life, can be subject specific, and/or can include more general information sessions: Choosing a course and university, Money matters: loans, grants, bursaries and survival; Student life: work and play; Student support (at Roehampton University); UCAS application: process and personal statements; and Why go to university?

Academic staff can visit your school to present a talk about their subject specialism and/or deliver a sample lecture to your students, or your students can visit the University for a taster day which additionally allows them to tour the campus with student ambassadors.

Student Ambassadors
Across many of the activities, fully CRB-checked undergraduate student ambassadors work with your students to offer advice and information about all aspects of life at university from the student perspective.

Schools and Colleges Liaison Conference
We host a conference for teachers and HE/careers advisors each June (2010 date will be released soon). Senior academic staff and staff from the major central support departments talk about key, relevant issues that today’s students need to know about. For a review of the 2009 conference go to:
