Image of School of Oriental and African Studies

Founded in 1916, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) is an exceptionally cosmopolitan and vibrant university, based in the heart of one of the world’s most exciting and ethnically diverse cities.

With more than 4,600 students from all around the world representing 130 nationalities, SOAS makes for a fascinatingly diverse, lively and close-knit community.

Students are drawn to SOAS by its international reputation for academic excellence as well as the opportunity to study in a lively environment with others who are passionate about Africa, Asia and the Middle East. It is the only university in Europe specialising in these highly relevant regions.

At SOAS students can choose from more than 350 degree combinations in social sciences, arts, humanities and languages, taught by renowned scholars who are active researchers and leaders in their fields.

Whether you are an aspiring UN diplomat, eager to learn more about African history, dreaming of staging kabuki plays or passionate about championing human rights, studying at SOAS will give you the skills and contacts to hit the ground running.

Our current relationships with London schools
Our relationships with schools are managed by the Widening Participation team, which is part of the Academic Development Directorate.

The team offer a range of activities for schools across all year groups which provide the opportunity for students to engage with our excellent and inspiring academics and students. These include a wide range of activities. Some examples are half-day on-campus masterclasses in Chinese and Economics, debates with leading academics in Human Rights and African history courses delivered on school premises.

We also work in a number of collaborative partnerships aimed at raising aspirations and progression to university. These include Aimhigher WECAN, Student Associates, Aimhigher Associates and Capital L – Routes into Languages. In addition we with work with many local schools in helping their students realise their full potential.
