Department of Education

St George's, University of London

St George's, University of London, image of students

St George’s, University of London is a specialist college of the University of London, and the UK’s only specialist provider of medical and healthcare Higher Education.  Sharing our premises with one of Europe’s busiest hospitals, our students can walk from clincial teaching to laboratory to hospital ward or clinic.  Our specialist nature, small scale and location in Tooting, South West London, combine with our community minded staff and students to form the warm and friendly environment that is St George’s.

Given that the vast majority of our students will move into employment within the National Health Service we are committed to recruiting students that are not only academically excellent, but also representative of the diverse population they will be serving.

To this end, the quality of our liaison with schools and colleges, primarily through our Widening Participation Unit, has been recognised with over a dozen regional and national awards over the past six years.

Our current relationships with London schools
These are managed through our Widening Participation Unit, which works closely with Student Recruitment and Admissions to ensure as professional a service as possible for our prospective students.

The Widening Participation Unit offers a wide range of medical and healthcare related activities for schools right across London – from year 5 through to year 13 and beyond.  Copies of our brochure “Working with Schools and Colleges” are sent to all London state schools – if you are unable to locate your school’s copy then details can be found on our website or by contacting us directly.

Our range of activities are run on site at St George’s as well as directly in London schools.  A large number of these involve contributions from our Student Ambassadors – students training to be medical and healthcare professionals.  Despite being a small Institution (with just over 600 students per year) we have over 180 students who make regular contributions through our Student Ambassador programme.

In addition to our on and off site activities, we are at the cutting edge of student engagement through the use of new media, as demonstrated through our award winning website:

W www.tasteofmedicine.com

We also run a central Student Recruitment Unit, able to deal with all queries and questions relating to the often complex and certainly highly competitive world of medical and healthcare application. Contact:

Contacting our academic departments
St George’s has two faculties: The faculty of medical and biomedical sciences; and the faculty of health and social care sciences (the latter run jointly with Kingston University).

Given our specialist nature, engagement with schools is run centrally through the WP Unit (contact details above).  This way, whatever your request or query, we will be able to help you through a single point of contact, whether that be linked to our range of existing activities, a request for the involvement of Student Ambassadors or a request for the involvement of healthcare professionals.
