Department of Education

University of Greenwich

University of Greenwich image of young people

The University of Greenwich is home to a thriving community of over 23,000 students of all ages, from over 140 countries. We offer a range of programmes, many of them work-related with a strong professional and vocational focus. Additionally we offer part-time flexible programmes to enhance the professional development and employability skills people in the workplace. Our subject areas include:  pharmacy, engineering, health and social care, humanities, IT, science, architecture and construction and education.

The University of Greenwich has a strong tradition of working with community groups, schools and colleges in south-east London.  This is reflected in a diverse student population with a significant proportion of students originating from backgrounds of low participation.

The Access and Widening Participation Unit is a dedicated department that delivers and manages a wide range of outreach activities.  As members of the Aspire South East London and the South East London Lifelong Learning Network (SELLN) the University has developed progression routes and provided information, advice and guidance and innovative events for young people.

Our current relationships with London schools

The University has strong relationships with local schools and has designed imaginative, engaging programmes and interventions that support the curriculum, raise the aspirations of the students and contribute to enhancing their achievement.

Student Ambassadors
Over 300 undergraduate and postgraduate students work as Student Ambassadors, a programme which has received national recognition. Their work includes delivering student life presentations and personal statement workshops.  Sustained interventions with targeted secondary school students over a number of weeks help to enhance their learning.

Curriculum support in schools
Working in partnership with teachers to support Key Stage 4 & 5, topical subject-specific workshops are provided that extend the learning opportunities.  For example the science workshops enable practical projects to be undertaken by providing specialist equipment and academic expertise.

Subject specific taster days
Annually we deliver a range of taster days targeted at the vocational aspirations of prospective learners - these include Law, Business, Education and Health/Social Care.  Widening participation students are invited on to campus to experience life at a university for a day and are provided with vital pre-entry information to support their UCAS applications, meet employers and experience practical workshops.

Summer Schools
Both residential and non-residential summer schools are offered to widening participation students, in a diverse range of subjects. Practical projects to encourage group working are provided along with a social programme and opportunities for advice and guidance.
