London has the largest collective group of medical schools in the country. It is an exceptional place to learn and practice medicine and there is a unique diversity of students, patients and services. London has a long history of providing excellent and world renowned medical education and its five medical schools are at the heart of that specialist training.
In late 2016 the Government proposed to expand medical education in England, increasing the number of places offered to students in medical schools – the biggest increase in medical training in the history of the NHS. Just as the news hit, the London Medicine group happened to be sitting around a table with the GMC, HEE and DH discussing undergraduate clinical placements in London. A fortunate coincidence it may seem that London Medicine’s flagship programme ‘Vital Signs’ is tackling a themed approach into clinical placements, and this news was pivotal to our workstreams.
London Medicine will be working with all London medical schools to provide a London-wide response to the Government’s consultation on the proposed increase in numbers. We’re also continuing our work on clinical placements, with the development of an interactive placement capacity map to be published in late 2017.
