For as long as we can remember, student nurses have been given a bursary to help towards their studies. With course fees being paid for, it’s no surprise that universities found themselves inundated with applications and nursing proved to be an extremely popular choice of study for many. From August 2017, new students will no longer have their course fees paid and instead will have access to student support in the form of a student loan. Whilst this ‘new’ system is in fact the same system that all other degree students have access to, this change may have a big impact on the number and type of applications seen to nursing.
The Healthcare Education Group continues to engage on the funding reforms with its members and stakeholders. A response to the Department of Health’s consultation resulted in a meeting being set up to discuss the impact on small and specialist subject provision with HEFCE. An ongoing student recruitment survey is also taking place with members to keep abreast of any changes or concerns.
